It Doesn’t Get Any Better Than This

Doug Johnson just wrote about Joy in the Classroom and asks at the end of his post, “How do you bring joy to learning in your classroom, library or computer lab?”  Today, however, the joy was brought to me by two classes of kindergarten scientists.  I had the best day ever.  Some of these kids aren’t even 5 years old yet and they were in the stream collecting data, making observations, and asking questions.  It was awesome.  So my question to you is, “What joy did kids bring to you today?”

Well, it just so happens that I gave this assignment today to violate a social norm. Pictures and video of the violation is worth extra. So toward the end of class we are watching a clip on “social influence” and I stop the video. One of my students stands up and is talking on his phone. I’m taken by surprise….ask him what he is doing and proceed to try to take his cell phone away. He was actually doing his homework….and was videotaping my reaction to him using his cell phone. He got me so bad!! I don’t even want to see the video of my reaction….heck, I even encourage use of cell phones (for education purposes)….his behavior was just so blatant. Anyway….we all had a great laugh on the student who got over on his teacher on his own assignment!

That just rocks. Waltman, don’t underestimate your students. They’ll stick it to you every time.
